The City Covers Me

“The City Covers Me” investigates a juxtaposition of urban malaise and the action of passing — be that passing as white or passing as black. The visual anthology traverses through five chapters in the form of visual poems, each presenting a location and a query. The piece is a tribute to my vibrant and layered lineage. Though I, of course, write from a position of great privilege. While I embrace and cherish my Creole half, my fair skin will always protect and shield me from the sharper edges of society. While I am the one to craft and breathe life into these five visual poems, my forefathers and foremothers are the ones who carried my family's line to the place where it is today. I owe everything to them.
